Marie-Claude Felton, a Royal Bank of Canada-Bodleian Visiting Scholar in 2013-14, describes her research on the legal and business history of self-publishing in the eighteenth century.
Self-publishing in the internet age is regarded as a new way for authors to make their work known. But self-publishing has a long history. Despite legal and technological hurdles, authors in the eighteenth century sometimes chose to publish works themselves. Their motives for doing so, and the means by which they negotiated the business of getting works printed, are the subjects of Marie-Claude Felton's lecture, delivered on 3 June 2014 in the Convocation House, Bodleian Library.
