How the immune system detects flu virus

Series
Epidemics and Vaccines
Embed
Dr Jan Rehwinkel talks about the role of our innate immune system in our fight against flu virus.
The innate immune response is critical for a successful defence against viral infection. The first arm of our immune response is triggered by the detection of the presence of the virus: cell surface receptors detect the presence of viral genomic information. Dr Jan Rehwinkel is working to dissect the molecular biology of nucleic acid sensors. A better understanding of these mechanisms might help us develop better vaccination strategies.

Where are the robots?

Series
Oxford London Lecture
Embed
Where are the robots we seem to have been promised since the 1950s? What is the hold up? Are we nearly there now? For example, will cars be driving themselves soon?
Professor Paul Newman talks about the nature and solutions of challenges which have arisen on the way to building machines that can labour, protect, explore, build, manufacture, care and drive in our name. Staggering changes in computing, connectivity and opportunity are coming together and this provides a platform from which to peer into what we should expect in the coming decade. Robotics will change us.
