Academic Dress
Academic dress is obligatory at formal University ceremonies. This form of robes and hoods designated to the different subjects and degrees may be traced back to medieval Europe, when dress marked out the rank and profession of the wearer. The robes worn today are much the same as those worn in the 16th century.
The Sheldonian Theatre
Designed by a young Christopher Wren (Professor of Astronomy) and completed in 1669, the Theatre has served the University for over 350 years as a superb setting for its public ceremonial occasions. The ceiling fresco by King Charles II's court painter, Robert Streater, represents The Triumph of the Arts and Sciences over Envy, Rapine and Ignorance. Music is provided by University organ scholars (Betts Organ Programme).
A few words about the filming of this ceremony
Our media team has over 30 years experience of recording the degree ceremonies using cameras dotted around the Sheldonian Theatre. Although this livestream will be removed shortly after the event, a high quality downloadable copy of this stream will be available to purchase from the University Shop.
*Please note that we edit the recording to include a message from the Chancellor, Chris Patten, after the event so it may take a few days before the recording will be available.
