Oxford Mathematics Public Lectures: Marc Lackenby - Knotty Problems

Series
The Secrets of Mathematics
Embed
Knots are a familiar part of everyday life, for example tying your tie or doing up your shoe laces. They play a role in numerous physical and biological phenomena, such as the untangling of DNA when it replicates.
However, knot theory is also a well-developed branch of pure mathematics.

In his talk, Marc gives an introduction to this theory and places it in the context of the modern field of topology. This is the branch of mathematics where you are allowed to stretch and deform objects, but not tear them. He explains how topological techniques can be used to prove some surprising facts about knots. He also gives some problems about knots that mathematicians haven't yet been able to solve.

Marc Lackenby is a Professor of Mathematics in Oxford and a Fellow of St Catherine's College.

Faith and Sexuality – A Safeguarding Crisis?

Series
Oxford LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) History Month Lectures
Embed
Ozanne outlines clear evidence of the harm that certain teachings have caused the LGBT community and what can be done to address this major safeguarding issue affecting young LGBT Christian teenagers today.

The harmful effects of prejudice and discrimination on the LGBTI community have been acknowledged for some time by the medical professions, however few have been able to provide evidence of the role that religion can play in fuelling this. Jayne Ozanne is a well-known gay evangelical who works to ensure full inclusion of all LGBTI Christians at every level of the Church. She is Director of the Ozanne Foundation, which works with religious organisations around the world to eliminate discrimination based on sexuality or gender in order to embrace and celebrate the equality and diversity of all.
