Tony Shaw and Giora Goodman - Hollywood and Israel: A History

Series

The authors of a recently published book dealing with the history of Hollywood's relation with Israel discuss some of their findings
From Frank Sinatra's early pro-Zionist rallying to Steven Spielberg's present-day peace-making, Hollywood has long enjoyed a 'special relationship' with Israel. Based on a newly-published book by Columbia University Press, this paper outlines the ways in which Hollywood's moguls, directors, and actors have supported or challenged Israel for more than seven decades, including Eddie Cantor, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Redgrave, Arthur Krim and Arnon Milchan. The paper probes the influence of Israeli public diplomacy on Hollywood's output and lobbying activities, but also highlight the limits of ideological devotion in high-risk entertainment industries. It demonstrates how show business has played an important role in crafting the U.S.-Israel alliance and illuminates how U.S. media and soft power have helped shape the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Tony Shaw is professor of contemporary history at the University of Hertfordshire.
Giora Goodman, a historian, chairs the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies at Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee.

Katrien Devolder and Dominic Wilkinson explore reasons why some parents are vaccine-hesitant
Many who had no doubts whatsoever about getting a COVID-vaccine for themselves, are much more hesitant when it comes to vaccinating young children. Is such hesitation justified? In this Thinking Out Loud interview, Katrien Devolder (Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics) talks to Dominic Wilkinson, Consultant Neonatologist and Professor of Medical Ethics at the University of Oxford, about what sort of ethical considerations are at play when considering whether to vaccinate young children.

Defending the selective restriction of liberty during pandemics

Katrien Devolder and Julian Savulescu discuss the ethics of lockdowns
Should lockdowns and other restrictions of liberty during pandemics be imposed on part of the population only? Many people accept that, to protect public health, it is sometimes acceptable, or morally obligatory, to restrict people’s liberties. But there’s a lot of disagreement about how far these restrictions should go, and whom they should apply to: everyone, or certain groups of people only? In this Thinking out Loud interview, Professor Julian Savulescu (Uehiro Chair of Practical Ethics, University of Oxford) defends the view that we should only restrict the liberties of the vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Katrien Devolder and Jonathan Pugh discuss vaccine nationalism
High income countries have been criticised for hoarding covid-19 vaccines: they have been accused of 'vaccine nationalism'. But what exactly is vaccine nationalism? Is it really wrong to prioritise one's own citizens? How can we do better when the next pandemic strikes? In this Thinking Out Loud interview, philosopher Dr Jonathan Pugh (Oxford) discusses these questions with Dr Katrien Devolder.

Sometimes threats come from inside the system (content warning: intimate partner violence).
This week we're talking with Julia about how to model risk when the threat is known and trusted (e.g., coercion, manipulation and surveillance).
Julia Slupska is a doctoral student at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Cybersecurity and the Oxford Internet Institute. Her research focuses on technologically-mediated abuse like image-based sexual abuse ('revenge porn') and stalking, as well as emotion, care and metaphors in cybersecurity.
Julia's recent papers: Aiding Intimate Violence Survivors in Lockdown: Lessons about Digital Security in the Covid-19 Pandemic (https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3491101.3503548); Cybersecurity must learn from and support advocates tackling online gender-based violence (https://unidir.org/commentary/cybersecurity-online-GBV).
In this episode we refer to: Ashkan Soltani's article on what 'abusability' is (https://www.wired.com/story/abusability-testing-ashkan-soltani); an example of intimidation during court proceedings held over Zoom court hearing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgz3Tx69zXk); Trust and Usability Toolkit (https://northumbria.design/projects/trust-and-abusability-toolkit); RightsCon (FREE tickets until June 3rd 2022, rightscon.org/attend); USENIX conference (Privacy Engineering Practice and Respect, or PEPR).
