Designing and building apps to protect children and young folk from data harms.
This episode we're talking with Anirudh about how app design may affect children, and how data collected from apps could be putting kids at risk.

Anirudh is a cyber security researcher at the University of Oxford and he is part of the Human Centred Computing group in the Computer Science department. In his research he focuses on children's privacy and data tracking in the mobile ecosystem.

We mention the age-appropriate design code, here is some guidance on it from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO): https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/ico-codes-of-practice/age-appropriate-design-code

Exploring how hate groups use, lose and abuse social media networks.
This episode we're talking with Fatima about how and why hate groups use online platforms to plan acts of violence and recruit new members.

Fatima Zahrah is a Cyber Security DPhil student at the University of Oxford. Her research interests focus around how multiple platforms are strategically used in online hate to form resilient networks of hate. Her work combines insights drawn from social sciences and uses methods from computer science, including natural language processing and social network analysis.

Her most recent paper is: Zahrah, Nurse & Goldsmith. 2022. A Comparison of Online Hate on Reddit and 4chan:, A Case Study of the 2020 US Election. In Proceedings of ACM SIGAPP Symposium on Applied Com- puting (SAC) (SAC’22). ACM, New York, NY, USA, Article 4, 4 pages. https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.01302

We also mention VOX-Pol, a project exploring how violent extremist politics play out online, (https://www.voxpol.eu) and the International Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM - https://www.icwsm.org/2022/index.html)

Welcome to Proving the Negative, a podcast exploring the wide wonderful world of cyber security research.
We're kicking off the series with a quick intro to the podcast. This season, we're covering topics from online hate, child-safe app design, and tech-enabled intimate partner violence.

Claudine Tinsman is a DPhil student in cyber security. Her research explores the role that individual differences play in determining how people react to social media content. Arianna wants to protects people as well as data. Her research interests relate to building positive, pro-active security cultures and re-thinking how we talk about data use. She has spent the last year leading security work in UK innovation projects.
