Series
Back Garden Biology
Embed
Did you know that just five groups of insects dominate your garden? And can you tell the difference between bugs and beetles?
In this week's episode, meet the Bug Five and learn how to tell them apart, with beautiful drawings by Lindsay's former student, Pandora Dewan, and lots of new video clips. You are encouraged to select your own Bug Five, by choosing your favourite representative of each of the five groups and you can decide whether Linday's Bug Five are better or worse than those selected by entomologist Liam Crowley.

Medically Assisted Dying in Canada: from where we’ve come; to where we’re heading

Series

In this New St Cross Special Ethics Seminar, Professor Arthur Schafer outlines the current contours of the Canadian euthanasia debate.
In June of 2016 the Canadian Parliament passed legislation (Bill-14) legalizing MAiD: medical assistance in dying. Subject to various restrictions, both mercy killing and medically assisted suicide are now legal in Canada. The contours of the Canadian euthanasia debate will be described, with special focus on the ethical issues that remain most controversial. Two salient Canadian Supreme Court decisions will be analysed: Rodriguez (1993) and Carter (2015), as well as more recent constitutional challenges. The presentation will conclude by outlining the further legal changes that are likely to (or that should) occur in the reasonably near future.

Seeds of Change

Series
Back Garden Biology

In this episode we take a look at the strange life-cycle of ferns and find out why they are so dependent on water.
Nearly all familiar plants produce seeds, but the first plants to colonise the land did not. Ferns belong to an ancient group and continue to be successful, but they don't produce seeds and tend to be restricted to damp, shady places. We take a look at the strange life-cycle of ferns and find out why they are so dependent on water. We also take a look at germinating seeds and discover why it's so hard to tell young seedlings apart.

In this 2nd episode, we collate rare colour Oxfordshire footage shot in 1944 by US airforce officers. Film clips concentrate on the social life in Oxford city centre, Wallingford, Dorchester, Abingdon and surrounding villages.
Rare world war two colour provided by William Lorton from the archive of relative James R. Savage, filmed during his time as a Flight Surgeon for the 14th Photo Reconnaissance Unit at Mount Farm Airbase in Oxfordshire. This film includes never before seen colour and black and white 16mm film of Oxford during the war in the summer of 1944. The film starts with a clip filmed by James R. Savage of a fellow officer buying a ticket for a trip on an Oxford Salters boat, to travel down the River Thames to Wallingford. The film clips were likely filmed to show relatives back home in the US, and concentrate on tourist sights and the social life in Oxford city centre, Wallingford, Dorchester, Abingdon and surrounding villages.

Writing about the Nechung Oracle

Series
Tibetan Graduate Studies Seminar

Christopher Bell's talk about oracles, protector deities, and other mysteries
The Dalai Lama has sought and trusted the advice of the Nechung Oracle for centuries. In that time, this powerful office has involved the Tibetan Buddhist protector deity Pehar, or his emanations, to possess a human medium and offer prophetic counsel periodically. But the mechanisms through which the institution of Nechung grew, and the contours of the close relationship between the bodhisattva and the god, have yet to receive sustained attention.
The speaker will first outline the growth of the Nechung cult through three lenses - mythical, ritual, and institutional - before discussing the often obscure process of book publication as he makes his way through its final stages with this project.

Hot as mustard

Series

In this episode we look closely at Garlic mustard or Jack-by-the-hedge, a very common plant throughout the UK.
Garlic mustard or Jack-by-the-hedge is a very common plant throughout the UK. Confined to hedgerows, it's a familiar sight in April and May with its tiny white flowers and most of us probably pay it rather little attention. But in America, where it was brought by settlers, it is regarded as a serious pest. We examine the insects that are found on garlic mustard and find out why plants sometimes 'go bad'.

Why do we need people to translate when we have machine translation?

Series

Some people ask why they should bother learning a language when there are online apps and websites which can translate quickly and accurately.
In this episode of LinguaMania, Matthew Reynolds and Eleni Philippou argue that translation is so much more than just changing words from one language into another. Translation is creative, it's personal, and it can help build communities.
