In the second episode of the Global Thinkers of the International Discussion Series, join Professor Judith Brown to discuss the international thought of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. After independence, Nehru became the virtual director of India’s foreign policy. Under his guidance India became the first state to have pursued a policy that was new in the history of international relations- the policy of Non-alignment. He was supported by Naser of Egypt, Sukarno of Indonesia and Joseph Broz Tito of Yugoslavia. His policies of non-alignment and Panchscheel—principles of peaceful coexistence—guided India’s international relations until the outbreak of the Sino-Indian War in 1962, which contributed to his declining health and subsequent death in 1964, ending his 17-years in office.

Stinker!

Series
Back Garden Biology

In this episode we look at the cuckoo pint, which has an unusual flower with the central part, called a spadix, releasing a stench that to our nostrils is quite revolting.
Many flowers produce scents to attract pollinators, but few go to quite the same lengths as the cuckoo pint (Arum maculatum). The plant produces a highly unusual flower and the central part, called a spadix, then heats up, releasing a stench that to our nostrils is quite revolting. But of course, the plant isn't trying to attract humans. Instead, it has evolved to attract a single species of moth midge which it traps for the night to make sure that it is covered in pollen, before releasing it the following morning.

Learn how to identify common garden bees and find out why they never seem to stay still.
In March and April queen bumblebees shake off their winter sleep and emerge to found new colonies. In this episode, we learn how to identify the commonest garden species and find out why they never seem to stay still. Bees, like all species of ants, bees and wasps, have a highly unusual system to determine whether new bees will be male or female. But although all worker bees are female, the queen tries to prevent her daughters from having offspring of their own.

Islamic manuscripts and bindings as a window on East-West relations

Series
The Bodleian Libraries (BODcasts)
Embed
The making, use and trade of manuscripts was an important part of Islamic culture, the technical developments influenced the making of books in the west from the later medieval period onward.
When dominance of powers shifted, the perception of the Islamic manuscript tradition also changed. While intricately embellished bindings continued to receive attention, the majority of manuscripts were usually not studied as artefacts. Yet there is much to be learned from the methods and materials used to make these objects, and the traces of use that history left in them.
