Evolving, Maturing, Rejuvenating: 30 Years of University-Industry Engagement

Series
Oxford UIDP Summit
Embed
The interactions between university and industry have firmly been on the agenda of policy making and university administration for more than 30 years now.
It is obvious that such interactions have come in various forms and keep adapting and changing in line with new societal, technological and economic needs and opportunities. Not only do they respond to them, but rather do they help create them. Taking an American, Asian, Canadian and European, evolution and renewal in university-industry engagement are highlighted, taking into account the potential generated by new technologies such as AI and Machine Learning in shaping them. With David Gann, Imperial College Business School, Imperial College London, and UK Atomic Energy Authority

Oxford Mathematics Public Lectures: John Bush - Walking on water: from biolocomotion to quantum foundations

Series
The Secrets of Mathematics
Embed
In this Public Lecture, which contains more technical content than our norm, John Bush presents seemingly disparate topics which are in fact united by a common theme and underlaid by a common mathematical framework.
First there is the natural world where creatures use surface tension to support themselves on the water surface and propel themselves along it. Then there is a small droplet bouncing along
the surface of a vibrating liquid bath, guided or 'piloted’ by its own wave field - its ability to reproduce many features previously thought to be exclusive to quantum systems has launched the field of hydrodynamic quantum analogs, and motivated a critical
revisitation of the philosophical foundations of quantum mechanics.

John Bush is a Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at MIT specialising in fluid dynamics.

Delius and the Sound of Place

Book at Lunchtime: Delius and the Sound of Place
Few composers have responded as powerfully to place as Frederick Delius (1862–1934). Born in Yorkshire, Delius resided in the United States, Germany, and Scandinavia before settling in France, where he spent the majority of his professional career. This book examines the role of place in selected works, including 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring', Appalachia, and The Song of the High Hills, reading place as a creative and historically mediated category in his music. Drawing on archival sources, contemporary art, and literature, and more recent writing in cultural geography and the philosophy of place, this is a new interpretation of Delius' work, and he emerges as one of the most original and compelling voices in early twentieth-century music. As the popularity of his music grows, this book challenges the idea of Delius as a large-scale rhapsodic composer, and reveals a richer and more productive relationship between place and music.

Defying Hitler: The White Rose Resistance Group

Series
The Bodleian Libraries (BODcasts)
Embed
Dr Alexandra Lloyd, Lecturer in German, Magdalen College and St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, gives a talk on the White Rose Resistance Group.
In 1943 five students and a professor at the University of Munich were arrested, tried, and executed. They were members of The White Rose (Die Weiße Rose), a clandestine group that wrote and distributed pamphlets calling on the Germans to resist Hitler. The pamphlets are fascinating texts, drawing on a range of philosophical ideas and influences. They urge readers to open their eyes to the atrocities being committed in the name of the regime, denounce the persecution of European Jews, and call for an end to the war. This talk introduces the White Rose group and examines the way they used the written word to inspire resistance.
