Timor-Leste, Challenges in Post-Independence: From Dream to Reality

Series

José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Former President of East Timor, speaks at St Antony's College.
What the experience of Timor-Leste teaches us is that there are no short cuts to peace; peace is a journey that must be reached step by step, a foundation that has to be built block by block. In my country we had to heal the wounds of the body and the heart; we honoured the victims, we are caring for the survivors; and we decided not to be hostage of the past, not to succumb to anger and hatred.
When we fight for freedom, human dignity and justice, we fight because of our convictions and our conscience; but we only succeed in these noble endeavours if we also use our brains, our intelligence and common sense in pursuing these noble ideals and goals; we would be doomed to fail if we do not evaluate each and every situation and each and every step. After 24 years of a tumultuous relationship, Indonesia and Timor-Leste parted ways; in 2002 Timor-Leste achieved independence.
In spite of the tragic past of violence, even as almost every Timorese family were still mourning the loss of loved ones, the leaders of the two countries began a process of reconciliation and normalization of relations.
An illustration of how far and deep Indonesia-Timor Leste's relationship has developed after the tumultuous years of occupation and resistance (1975-1999), is the fact that Timor-Leste's ASEAN membership application has been most passionately championed by Indonesia. While in our own region, some had reservations about Timor-Leste's readiness to join ASEAN and become an effective member, Timor-Leste is playing a constructive and pro-active role elsewhere in the world and gaining sympathy and respect.

Multi-talented alumnus Tom McMillen describes his extraordinary life as a professional basketball player, scholar, politician and businessman.
At 6’ 11’’ and from a sporty family, the American was always destined for basketball, and he played at the highest levels, including in the controversial final between the US and USSR at the Olympic Games in 1972.

A Rhodes scholarship to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at University College in Oxford followed, and he juggled his studies simultaneously with a professional basketball career. After 11 years playing in the NBA, McMillen embarked on his political career, serving three consecutive terms as a Democratic Congressman for Maryland.

In this interview, McMillen also reflects upon his ‘multiple career disorder’, discusses US politics, and predicts victory for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race for the White House. The interview was recorded at the Alumni Weekend in North America in Washington DC in April 2016.

You may have heard the word “quantum” bandied around a lot. But what does it mean? In this animation we take a look at how the photon – the quantum particle of light – is being harnessed to help create new technologies like quantum computers.
To do this researchers need to be able to create and use photons, bits of light, one at a time - it's no mean feat. Find out some of the different ways they can do this and how it might change our world.

How do you know when it's time to wake up or go to sleep? More powerful than any alarm are your circadian rhythms.
In this animation we take a look at how these rhythms work and what controls them; inspired by the TeenSleep project being carried out at the University to look at how later start times at school might affect achievement.

'Relationships' part 1 - People and plants: balancing conservation and commerce

Series
Big Questions - with Oxford Sparks
Embed
How can working with people to understand how they use their local plants be used to protect them when industry moves in? How do we find and conserve areas of high 'bioquality'?
William Hawthorn explains how being able to identify what plants are where, and what their value are to local people can help protect the 'bioquality' of forests by creating meaningful guides for various industries that operate in these areas.
