Students from the Sarah Bonnell secondary school for girls in East London interview researchers attending the annual conference of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM).
Over two months in spring 2022, the public engagement team from the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging at the University of Oxford worked with nine Sarah Bonnell students on this podcast. All nine girls were specially selected by their teacher, Ms Salma Adel, due to their high performance in school and their interest in neuroscience. They participated in an intro session on MRI scanners and interview skills, then visited three different labs using MRI scanners around London (Imperial College London, UCL, and Guys' and St Thomas' Hospital Kings College London). After the students' lab visits, the researchers then came to Sarah Bonnell school to be interviewed by the students. Lastly, the students were able to attend the ISMRM conference (International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine) at the conference venue located nearby their school in London.

Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) Podcast
The Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN) at the University of Oxford aims to bridge the gap between laboratory neuroscience and human health, by performing multi-scale studies spanning from animal models through to human populations. WIN spans three departments in the University's Medical Sciences Division (Clinical Neuroscience, Psychiatry, and Experimental Psychology) and has 250+ members, including forty core staff who provide world-class support in radiography, physics, experimental, IT, admin, and engagement support. Public, policy, and patient engagement are priorities for WIN, whose researchers engage with a wide variety of audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Pandemic Ethics Accelerator Podcasts
The UK Pandemic Ethics Accelerator was a project to examine the ethical challenges faced during pandemics. It combined expertise from the Universities of Oxford, Bristol, Edinburgh, University College London, and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. This six-part podcast series is hosted by David Edmonds and covers some of the themes that emerged from the research.

November 2022 Podcast

Series
Let's talk e-cigarettes
Embed
In this episode Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Dr Nicola Lindson discuss the emerging evidence in e-cigarette research and summarise the findings of the newly published update to the Cochrane review of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation.
This podcast is a companion to the electronic cigarettes Cochrane living systematic review and shares the evidence from the monthly searches.
In the November 2022 episode Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Nicola Lindson bring us up to date with the latest findings from our Cochrane review of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. The latest Cochrane Review finds high certainty evidence that nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective than traditional nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) in helping people quit smoking. Jamie and Nicola summarise their research led by the University of Oxford, and funded by Cancer Research UK, which has found the strongest evidence yet that e-cigarettes, also known as 'vapes', help people to quit smoking better than traditional nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches and chewing gums. The new evidence published in the Cochrane Library finds high certainty evidence that people are more likely to stop smoking for at least six months using nicotine e-cigarettes, or 'vapes', than using nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches and gums. Evidence also suggested that nicotine e-cigarettes led to higher quit rates than e-cigarettes without nicotine, or no stop smoking intervention, but less data contributed to these analyses. The updated Cochrane review includes 78 studies in over 22,000 participants - an addition of 22 studies since the last update in 2021.
Smoking is a significant global health problem. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), in 2020, 22.3% of the global population used tobacco, despite it killing up to half of its users. Stopping smoking reduces the risk of lung cancer, heart attacks and many other diseases. Though most people who smoke want to quit, many find it difficult to do so permanently. Nicotine patches and gum are safe, effective and widely used methods to help individuals quit. E-cigarettes heat liquids with nicotine and flavourings, allowing users to 'vape' nicotine instead of smoking. Data from the review showed that if six in 100 people quit by using nicotine replacement therapy, eight to twelve would quit by using electronic cigarettes containing nicotine. This means an additional two to six people in 100 could potentially quit smoking with nicotine containing electronic cigarettes.

Heart Failure in Primary Care: Lessons from Big Data

Series
Evidence-Based Health Care
Embed
Dr Clare J Taylor, Academic GP, explores how we can use large, anonymised GP datasets to improve our understanding of heart failure management in primary care.
Nearly all UK residents are registered with a general practice and data collected during routine consultations can be used by researchers to understand more about common diseases. Heart failure occurs when the heart has been damaged and is struggling to pump enough blood to meet the needs of the body. Patients can feel breathless, exhausted and have swollen legs but treatments to improve quality of life and outlook are available.

In this lecture, Dr Taylor explores how we can use large, anonymised GP datasets to improve our understanding of heart failure management in primary care. With a focus on the patient throughout, she presents her recent work on heart failure diagnosis and survival to illustrate the power, and limitations, of using big GP data for research and to ultimately improve patient care.

Part of the Evidence-Based Health Care programme.

About the speaker:

Dr Clare J Taylor is a Clinical Lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. Her research explores heart failure in primary care using big data epidemiology, prospective studies, and qualitative work. The findings have been published in high-impact journals and informed national and European heart failure policy. Clare is also experienced in postgraduate teaching and doctoral supervision and was a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Chronic Heart Failure guideline committee. She also works as an NHS general practitioner.

The Making of the Modern Middle East

Series
Middle East Centre Booktalk
Embed
A vivid and authoritative account of the making of the modern Middle East, from the BBC’s long-serving correspondent in the region.
Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s International Editor (former Middle East Editor), has been covering the region since 1989 and is uniquely placed to explain its complex past and its troubled present.
In this new book, in part based on his acclaimed podcast, Bowen takes us on a journey across the Middle East and through its history. He meets ordinary men and women on the front line, their leaders, whether brutal or benign, and he explores the power games that have so often wreaked devastation on civilian populations as those leaders, whatever their motives, jostle for political, religious and economic control.
With his deep understanding of the political, cultural and religious differences between countries as diverse as Erdogan's Turkey, Assad's Syria and Netanyahu's Israel and his long experience of covering events in the region, Bowen offers readers a gripping and invaluable guide to the modern Middle East, how it came to be and what its future might hold.
