Alex Pryce considers how writers are readers, influenced and inspired by the works of other writers.
Taking as a starting point the literary afterlife of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, and the influence of Romantic John Keats on the First World War Poet Wilfred Owen, Alex discusses how writers are challenged by precursory writers, and introduces some theories of influence from T.S. Eliot and Harold Bloom.

Dr Julian Thompson considers a writer described by Kingsley Amis as 'our greatest writer of short stories'.
In this discussion of Rudyard Kipling, Julian acknowledges Kipling's lack popularity with readers, but argues for the greatness of short stories from across his ouvre and positions them as precursors to modernism.

Immune System in the Gastrointestinal tract

Series
Autoimmune Disease
Embed
Dr Holm Uhlig talks about the role of the immune system in our gastrointestinal tract.
The gastrointestinal tract is home to more bacteria than there are cells in our body. In order to stay healthy, our immune system must maintain a strong and effective response towards these bacteria. Dr Holm Uhlig is based at the Translational Gastroenterology Unit and studies defects in the immune response and regulation leading to immunopathology. Dr Uhlig is predominately interested in children with inflammatory bowel disease, and aims to understand the complex puzzle of molecular mechanisms involved.

Professor Richard Cornall tells us about his research on autoimmunity.
Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system, which is normally designed to attack pathogens, ends up attacking the body. This can lead to a number of diseases such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Richard Cornall aims to understand the causes of autoimmune disease, and also how people differ in their inherited susceptibility, and why these differences are sustained in human populations by natural selection.

Dr Simon Draper tells us about his progress in malaria vaccine research.
Dr Simon Draper's research interests include studies of vaccine induced malaria immunity. His group focuses on translational medicine. They will take their most promising vaccine candidates and manufacture them as clinical grade material. The next step is proof of concept clinical trials in healthy volunteers.

Dr Simon Draper tells us about his progress in malaria vaccine research.
The malaria parasite is a 'master of disguise'. Whilst the development of a vaccine has proved difficult, targeting a pathway for the parasite has led to the neutralisation of all strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Dr Simon Draper's research interests include studies of vaccine-induced malaria immunity and trials of vaccine candidates. Focusing on translational medicine, his group will take their most promising vaccine candidates and manufacture them as clinical grade material; the next step is proof of concept clinical trials in healthy volunteers.

Migrants and the state of long term care in England: opportunities and challenges

Shereen Hussein talks about migrants and long term/social care. She looks at what is meant my international migrants and at what constitutes long term care in the labour market sector. She also looks at the relevant work force.
COMPAS Seminar Series Trinity 2011: Filling the Gaps on the Impacts of Immigration. There is much discussion about the optimal number and desirable characteristics of migrants. A key aspect of this discussion is the impact of immigration on the receiving society, including impacts on the provision of certain services, crime, local wages, social cohesion, neighbourhood dynamics and housing. In some cases, the academic research on these impacts has not kept pace with the policy discussion. As a result, in many cases, policies are based on assumptions, rather than facts. In other cases, there is academic research on the impact, but has been ignored in policy creation. This seminar series hopes to shed light on these issues by exploring the impacts of immigration on receiving countries.
