We discuss how people check information that they suspect might be false, fake or misleading, and the role of news organisations in this process.
If people come across information which they suspect may be false, fake or misleading, where do they turn to verify or debunk it? This is the question at the heart of this episode of our podcast mini series on the Digital News Report 2025. We discuss what are the most frequently named sources, where news organisations fit in among the wider choice of institutions, platforms and fac-checking websites, and how this all varies according to different audience factors.

Speakers:
Rasmus Kleis Nielsen is a Professor at the Department of Communication of the University of Copenhagen and a Senior Research Associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. He is a co-author of the Digital News Report 2025.
Host Mitali Mukherjee is the Director of the Reuters Institute and is a political economy journalist with more than two decades of experience in TV, print and digital journalism.

Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Nicola Lindson interview Lauren McMillan, University of Stirling about her project evaluating the effectiveness of an e-cigarette intervention for smoking cessation at centres for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Associate Professor Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Lauren McMillan from the Institute for Social Marketing and Health (ISMH) at the University of Stirling.
In the June podcast Lauren discusses Project SCeTCH - a cluster RCT that evaluates the effectiveness of an e-cigarette intervention vs usual care at centres for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The study measures smoking abstinence over a 6 month follow-up period and includes embedded process and economic evaluations. If effective, the results will be used to inform the larger-scale implementation of offering e-cigarettes throughout centres for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to aid smoking cessation. Lauren is part of the research team, led by Dr Allison Ford at the University of Stirling, that conducted the process evaluation of the SCeTCH trial . The main SCeTCH trial was led by Professor Lynne Dawkins (London Southbank University) and Dr Sharon Cox (University College London).

This podcast is a companion to the electronic cigarettes Cochrane living systematic review and Interventions for quitting vaping review and shares the evidence from the monthly searches.

O rgyan Tshe dpag med traditions: Glimpse of an Ocean

Cathy Cantwell traces the tradition of Padmasambhava in the form of Amitāyus from Guru Chowang in the 14th century.
Many Nyingma tantric longevity practices are Padma-centric, e.g. the ’Chi med srog thig favoured in the Dudjom tradition, or the Padma tshe’i snying thig of the Khyentse tradition. These complex multi-layered cycles include many elements traceable to early sources, such as the Aparimitāyur-jñāna dhāraṇī widely attested in Imperial times, or Amitāyus longevity practices from the Ancient Tantra Collection (NGB). One NGB tantra, the Pooling Elixir Tantra of Immortal Lifespan (bdud rtsi 'khyil ba 'chi med tshe'i rgyud) contributed much to later Nyingma longevity practices, although not the Padma-centric vision. However, subsequent Nyingma longevity cycles are often presented in relation to the Great Guru’s accomplishment of the Vidyādhara level of deathless life (’chi med tshe’i rig ’dzin). Often the entire practice is conceived as a Guru Rinpoche cycle, with Padmasambhava and his consort Mandārava exemplifying the attainment of immortality at Māratika and appearing as Amitāyus and consort. The coalescing of Padma-centric practices no doubt has a complex history. Rather than attempt a survey, I dip into some early materials to demonstrate this orientation, with specific focus on the O rgyan Tshe dpag med traditions of Gu ru Chos dbang (1212-1270) and Ratna Gling pa (1403-1479).

Oxford Islam & Justice Seminar: Islamic Law beyond Fiqh

Series
Contemporary Islamic Studies
Embed
The Oxford Islam and Justice Programme aims to provide a grounding in the academic and debates about the relationship between Islamic views of justice and the modern political order.

This is the third seminar of Trinity Term 2025, with associated short pre-readings, and is taught by leading academic in the field Dr Mohammed Allehbi. The theme for this week's lecture is Islamic Law beyond Fiqh (700-1000 C.E.)

In this Trinity Term 2025 series we are exploring some of the deepest questions about Islam and political justice, including the ideas of political liberalism, natural law, statecraft, political theology, and 'secularism'. In all cases, we aim to expose students to a variety of competing perspectives that are grounded in the Islamic tradition. Recommended readings are provided for each seminar; completing at least the core readings beforehand will provide the richest possible learning experience. Additional, optional readings are provided for students who want to explore topics in greater depth.

You can download slides for the seminar.
