Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Nicola Lindson discuss emerging evidence in e-cigarette research and talk about the findings of their newly published Cochrane review of interventions for quitting vaping.
Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Associate Professor Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research. Jamie and Nicola share the findings of their new Cochrane review of interventions for quitting vaping published in January 2025 and funded by Cancer Research UK (https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD016058.pub2). This new review included nine studies in just over 5,000 participants. Studies tested nicotine replacement therapy, cytisine, varenicline, nicotine/vaping reduction and text message-based interventions. The review found that text-message-based interventions may help young people to stop vaping and that varenicline may help people to stop vaping when compared to no or minimal support. There was some promising evidence from a shorter study of cytisine. More information is needed on other interventions, on potential harms and on the effect on use of tobacco cigarettes. Twenty ongoing studies looking at a range of interventions were identified in the review. The motivation for the review and the press coverage is also discussed.
This podcast is a companion to the electronic cigarettes Cochrane living systematic review and Interventions for quitting vaping review and shares the evidence from the monthly searches.
Our literature searches for the EC for smoking cessation review carried out on 1st December and 1st January found 3 new studies (Kale 2024 DOI 10.1101/2024.09.13.24313612; Pericot-Valverde 2024 DOI 10.1093/ntr/ntae260; Sifat 2024 DOI 10.1016/j.dadr.2024.100295) and 3 linked studies (DOIs 10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e39695; 10.1111/add.16698; 10.1093/ntr/ntae223)

Making the Pitt Rivers Museum

Making the Pitt Rivers Museum

Lieutenant-General Pitt-Rivers did not make the museum in Oxford that bears his name, or the objects within it. The real makers of the museum are the people who lived (and live) outside its walls; who made and used the objects on display, and the people whose lives are captured in the photograph collections. Yet these makers have often been silenced within the Museum's displays, labels, catalogues and exhibitions, which have historically focused on collectors, cultures, and curators.

Join the Making the Museum project team for a behind-the-scenes look at how we are trying to redress this balance in the information the museum holds about its collections. You’ll not only hear from researchers and museum professionals but also practitioners, artists, and other modern makers from communities around the world. As we collaborate, you’ll hear about it, giving a real-time insight into the inner workings of the museum.

A Good Science Read: 'The Fly Trap' and 'As If Human: AI and Artificial Intelligence'

Professor Charles Godfray and Professor Frances Ashcroft discuss The Fly Trap by Fredrik Sjöberg and As if Human: AI and Artificial Intelligence by Neil Shadbolt and Roger Hampson.

The Fly Trap describes the life of the author on a remote island in the Swedish archipelago where he hunts for hoverflies. Partly autobiographical, partly a discourse on insects, collecting, and the life of some extraordinary butterfly collectors, it is an enchanting read, quite lyrical in some places and very funny in others. As if Human: AI and Artificial Intelligence discusses the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence. It addresses questions such as: what moral principles should we endow machines with?; who is accountable when things go wrong?; how do we use AI to empower rather than oppress people? How do we control privacy? It concludes with a set of guidelines (which the authors term ’proverbs’) on how a good citizen should approach the future.

Sir Charles Godfray is Professor of Population Biology at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Martin School and of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food. He is also a Fellow of both the Royal Society and of Balliol College Oxford. His research interests include food security, biodiversity, and environmental science. He also has a passion for insects, particularly a group of tiny parasitic wasps.
