Metabolism of Fatty Acids

Series
Translational Medicine
Embed
Dr Barbara Fielding talks about her research on the metabolism of fatty acids.
Dr Barbara Fielding believes that nutritional advice should be based on a thorough understanding of metabolic responses to food ingestion, and that it is important to investigate the metabolism of dietary fat after both single and multiple meals, as is customary daily behaviour in Western societies. Ultimately, this will help to make specific dietary recommendations.

Dr Barbara Fielding talks about her research on the metabolism of fatty acids.
Obesity continues to have a major impact on health care services in the UK. Dr Barbara Fielding believes that nutritional advice should be based on a thorough understanding of metabolic responses to food ingestion, and that it is important to investigate the metabolism of dietary fat after both single and multiple meals. By tracing fat atoms from meals into the blood, Dr Barbara Fielding's research into individual metabolic responses to food ingestion may lead to targeted, customised, and more effective nutritional advice for obese and overweight patients.

Series

Unlocking Protracted Displacement of Refugees and IDPs: Somali and Iraqi displacements and policy responses. A workshop co-hosted by Refugee Studies Centre and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at UNHCR London office on 6 March 2012.
The protracted displacement of refugees and IDPs constitutes a pressing yet seemingly intractable challenge facing the international community. Since 2010, the RSC has led a project, with the support of the Norwegian government and in cooperation with IDMC, NRC and NUPI, that suggests a number of innovative strategies to better match international policy to the needs of those trapped in protracted displacement. At an event co-hosted by the Refugee Studies Centre and UNHCR in London, the lead researchers shared their findings on Somali and Iraqi displacements and discussed with a group of 30 policymakers and practitioners some of the possible avenues for future policy responses.

Lecture: Rumour, conspiracy theory and propaganda

Series
Uehiro Oxford Institute
Embed
David Coady is a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Tasmania. He is the author of What to Believe Now: Applying Epistemology to Contemporary Issues and the editor of Conspiracy Theories: The Philosophical Debate.
Rumour and conspiracy theory are closely linked in both the popular imagination and academic debate, with the rumour often portrayed as a vehicle of conspiracy theory. They are also linked inasmuch as they are both typically thought to be bad things. In this paper I will defend rumour and conspiracy theory (along with rumour-mongers and conspiracy theorists) against some of their most prominent critics, and I will argue that campaigns against them are a form of propaganda (or, to be precise, two closely related forms of propaganda).

What is the impact of new migration on cohesion and integration?

Series
Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS)
Embed
The government and the media regularly make the case that migration must be restricted in order to ensure community cohesion and encourage integration.
To shed light on the relationship, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) recently commissioned a major report on the impacts of migration on cohesion and integration. This month's presenters include three of the four authors of that report and they will reflect on the findings of their research. They will also discuss what the findings mean for policymakers.
