Chatting with Chris Kowalski

Series
Conversations in Med Ed
Embed
In episode five we chat with Dr Chris Kowalski, a consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, from the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom, where he is the simulation lead and is involved in all stages of medical education.
Chris chats about his journey into Medical Education and his particular interest in simulation, triggered by witnessing a lack of experiential learning in psychiatry, for instance communication in complex clinical situations, such as mental health crises, and interprofessional collaboration. When reflecting on the intersections between education and research, be pragmatic and strategic in including research in educational designs and activities, such as being clear on the purposes of each but also evaluating said innovations. Chris shares the importance of career planning, dedicated time and maintaining boundaries (while juggling multiple roles and competing demands), and the necessity of working in teams. He ends with a challenge: how can we shift dispositions, values and ways of being, as opposed to merely developing knowledge and skills, in health professionals? You can connect with Chris on LinkedIn and see his research at Research Gate.

Chatting with Simone Titus-Dawson

Series
Conversations in Med Ed

In episode four we chat with Associate Professor Simone Titus-Dawson from the Centre for Health Professions Education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
Simone shares her organic multi- and inter-disciplinary journey from Sports Sciences to Gender Studies to Digital Education in the Health Sciences. Simone outlines her research from game-based teaching and learning, to considering the digital divide and access, towards virtual and augmented reality use in anatomy and physiology, as well as culturally sensitive stories developed with AI. Foundational practical recommendations around technology-use in education include meeting students where they are at, starting small, and ensuring that technological tools used are aligned to learning outcomes and scaffolded into digestible chunks. When thinking about possibly undertaking postgraduate studies in Health Professions Education, Simone offers advice for different career stages, with recommendations for mentorship and coaching, and “knowing your why”. Simone ends with a call for researchers in the global North to recognise the excellence of work in Health Professions Education from the global South – often done under challenging environments – and for equal partnerships.

Dr Christienna Fryar, writer and independent historian of Britain and the Caribbean, tells the stories of two mixed-race Jamaican women and questions the fraught relationship between British history and Black British history.
The University of Oxford Annual Black History Month Lecture hosted by The University BME Staff Network and Mathematical Institute.
Speakers: Dr Christienna Fryar, Professor Tim Soutphommasane.
Event date: 31 Oct 2023.

More on the speaker from Dr Fryar's website (https://www.cdfryar.com/):
"I am a writer and an independent historian of Britain and the Caribbean. At the heart of my work is the conviction that Britain and its history cannot be understood in isolation from the Caribbean. Sharing history as widely as possible and telling stories about the past and the present that explain, inspire, empower, and challenge has been an important part of my work."

Dr Roger Highfield joins Professor Frances Ashcroft to discuss 'Pain: A Ladybird Expert book' by Irene Tracey and 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson.
Pain is a very short book but it encompasses everything you want to know about pain in a clear and informative way. What it is, how we measure it, why we need it, and how we can – and often alas, cannot – treat it. A Short History of Nearly Everything is a highly accessible and entertaining account that of the world we live on that ranges from the creation of the solar system, to the structure of the atom, plate tectonics, the rise of life, the development of modern humans and how your cells work. The book won the Royal Society Aventis Science Book Prize in 2004 and the Descartes Prize in 2005, and was the biggest selling non-fiction book of the decade.

Roger is the Science Director of the Science Museum Group, a group of five museums that includes the Science Museum in London. He is also a Visiting Professor of Public engagement at the Universities of Oxford and University College London, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Honorary president of the Association of British Science Writers. Previously, Roger was the science editor of The Daily Telegraph for more than 20 years, and Editor of New Scientist for 4 years. He has written or co-authored nine books, most recently The Dance of Life, Symmetry Cells and How we become Human.

The United Nations and the Question of Palestine

Series
Middle East Centre Booktalk

Professor Ardi Imseis new book explores the UN’s management of the longest-running problem on its agenda, critically assessing tensions between the Organisation’s position and international law.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, there has been a continuing though vacillating gulf between the requirements of international law and the United Nations (UN) on the question of Palestine.
What forms has the UN’s failure to respect international law taken, and with what implications? The author critically interrogates the received wisdom regarding the UN’s fealty to the international rule of law, in favour of what is described as an international rule by law. This book demonstrates that through the actions of the UN, Palestine and its people have been committed to a state of what the author calls ‘international legal subalternity’, according to which the promise of justice through international law is repeatedly proffered under a cloak of political legitimacy furnished by the international community, but its realization is interminably withheld.
