Privacy 3.0 - A Critical Juncture or Convenient Hype?

Series
Centre for Socio-Legal Studies
Embed
Simon Davies (Director, Privacy International) presents an overview of the key privacy risks, especially as regards the Internet, which have emerged in the Web 3.0 era.
This seminar is the first in the OxPILS series "Mending the Tangled Web? Informational Privacy 3.0". This series has been generously made possible with funding from a Joint Programme between the European Union and the Council of Europe. (The views expressed are those of the individual speakers only). The talk argued that the current data protection framework is struggling to cope with the mass and diffuse nature of data processing which has now become ubiquitous. One way forward may be to develop and entrench technology with build-in privacy protections such as cryto-algorithms at every level.

A body of fluids? Physiology in pre-modern western medicine

Series
Green Templeton College
Embed
Professor Helen King (Professor of Classical Studies, The Open University) delivers the 2011 McGovern Lecture.
The notion of a 'body of fluids' being replaced by a 'body of organs' is widespread in the history of Western medicine, and the female body is seen as more 'fluid' than the male body. Yet, despite such claims, recent work on the pre-modern period has focused on anatomy rather than physiology. In this lecture, Professor King examines contemporary assumptions about the history of the body and the role of physiology in past societies.

Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski aims to reduce the burden of infectious disease in the developing world. He translates advances in genomic science into clinical and epidemiological applications. By sequencing over 1000 Plasmodium parasite samples around the world, Professor Kwiatkowski has identified genetic information to assist in monitoring the spread of drug resistance, and to fight the global burden of malaria. Professor Kwiatkowski mostly works on malaria but many of his tools and methodologies in genetics, statistics, informatics and ethics have applications for other diseases.
