Netta Cohen - When climate takes command: Jewish-Zionist scientific approaches to climate in Palestine 1900-1948

Series
Israel Studies Seminar
Embed
How did Zionist scientist see climate in Palestine?
Netta Cohen presents her doctoral research which occupies the intersection between modern Jewish history, climate and environmental history, the history of knowledge, and colonial history. Her talk focuses on Jewish physicians, architects, and botanists as they examined the potential ramifications of climate on the success of the Zionist project in Palestine between 1900 and 1948. Through the prism of climate, she explores the ways in which Jewish experts transported scientific knowledge from Europe and its colonies to Palestine. In addition to analysing the transfer of knowledge concerning climate, she also explores the role of climate – both as an abstract concept and a concrete condition – in shaping Jewish national, racial, cultural, and spatial identity in Palestine.

Admissions Testing Preparation Effects

Series
Department of Education Public Seminars
Embed
This seminar is the first of a five-part seminar series on 'Student Access to University'. This seminar discusses the relationships between student characteristics and test performances with Oxford University admissions tests data.

Selection to higher education typically includes the use of information about students' attainment, or predicted attainment, in school-leaving examinations such as A-levels. For selective universities and competitive undergraduate degree courses this information provides insufficient scope for discriminating between candidates. Furthermore, candidates are applying increasingly with qualifications from different international educational settings. To help provide a common point of reference across all candidates for a particular course, tests have been introduced as part of the admissions process in many courses at the University of Oxford. This project first explored the relationships between student characteristics and test performance with Oxford University admissions data before turning to study the effects of test preparation on TSA and BMAT for students applying to Oxford. How students prepare for admissions tests and whether this preparation has an impact on their performance in the test is an under-researched area.

Amnesties and Inclusive Political Settlements

Series
Oxford Transitional Justice Research Seminars
Embed
Amnesties are widely used during and after armed conflicts. Despite their controversial nature, international policymakers such as the UN continue to recognise some forms of amnesty in these settings are necessary to facilitate conflict resolution.
However, the specific forms and functions of amnesties during conflict and peace, and how they are tied to the negotiation and implementation of the broader peace process have rarely been subject to systematic academic analysis. In this presentation, Mallinder will present work that she is currently undertaking to this gap in the literature.

A Glimpse Into Contested Indigenous Peoples' Rights in Peru: The Forced Sterilization of Indigenous Women

Series
Oxford Transitional Justice Research Seminars
Embed
This study examines Peru's status of indigenous peoples' rights.
Specifically, it assesses the state’s respect towards indigenous rights through a case omitted by the TRC but one that continues to dominate political rhetoric: the forced sterilization of women of indigenous and poor economic backgrounds. Specifically, the study focuses on memory initiatives within symbolic reparations and the TRC's Final Report, and how these two processes have situated the case of forced sterilization within the broader context of the internal armed conflict.

Battling for (In)justice: Resurgent Authoritarianism, Ongoing Conflict, and Transitional Justice in the Arab Region

Series
Oxford Transitional Justice Research Seminars
Embed
Transitional justice scholarship and practice has predominantly operated on the assumption that transitions entail a shift from violent, authoritarian rule to liberal, democratic rule.
As we all know, this has not been the case in the Arab region. Instead, transitional justice has served as a battleground for competing visions of justice. Demons of the past that have morphed into the present continue to hijack transitional justice processes, and in particular the prosecution of political leaders.

The Death of the ICC? The Politics of International Criminal Justice in Africa

Series
Oxford Transitional Justice Research Seminars
Embed
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is struggling at every level of its operations in Africa - in terms of its investigations, prosecutions, and relations with domestic governments, judiciaries and affected communities.
This raises key questions about whether, after 16 years of consistent shortcomings and mounting frustration even among some of its most ardent supporters, the Court can survive. The Court's conceptual and practical 'distance' from the places where crimes are committed greatly undermines its effectiveness and requires a major rethink about how international criminal justice is conducted, especially in the Global South. This presentation lays out the main arguments of my new book, Distant Justice: The Impact of the International Criminal Court on African Politics (Cambridge University Press), and draws on 20 months of fieldwork in central Africa and The Hague since 2006, including 650 interviews with ICC officials, domestic political, legal and civil society actors, and local communities.
